CASE STUDY
Finance Dash
A self-hosted finance dashboard with an AI assistant that answers questions from your real numbers.
The brief
I wanted one place that showed my whole financial picture, and that I could actually ask questions of, without handing my data to another company's app. So I built my own, connected it to my accounts, and gave it an AI assistant that reads the real numbers.
What it does
-
01An AI assistant that knows your numbers
Ask a question in plain language, like whether you can spend $200 on a gift this month, and it answers from your actual accounts. It uses Claude with tool use to pull the real figures, and it is one tap away from a chat bubble on any page.
-
Scheduled + Claude 02Automated monthly reports
Every month a scheduled job builds your charts and a written summary into a PDF and saves it to a Google Drive folder, with no action from you.
-
03Your whole picture at a glance
The overview tracks your net worth over time from daily snapshots, with a progress ring for a savings goal.
-
04A debt-payoff planner
Every balance shows its rate and minimum, with a computed payoff plan that targets the highest interest first, so you can see what an extra payment does.
-
05Spending insights
Your spending is broken down by category and month, with drill-down into any group and a running monthly trend.
-
06Self-hosted and private
It runs on my own server behind a Google sign-in, with automatic HTTPS and secure off-network access, so the financial data never sits with a third party.
The result
It runs on my home server and I use it daily. The assistant answers from my real numbers, and a written report lands in my Drive every month on its own.
